Japanese emperors lived from 794 to 1868 in Kyoto Gosho, the imperial palace in Kyoto. The Tokugawa shoguns (military governors) were based in Edo (Tokyo) but were able to rule near the emperors from Nijo Castle from 1626 to 1868. This castle is close, within walking distance.
